Obedience vs Manners

Today I had the opportunity to talk to a nice young woman. She told me that she took her dog to obedience classes. He graduated from the class but still didn't behave well at home. I told her that the difference between obedience and manners is this:

Obedience is when you tell your dog to do something that you have taught him to do and he does it with some reliability.

Manners is when your dog knows how to behave calmly and respectfully in a situation without necessarily being told what to do. I like to teach manners so that dogs can learn to be obedient!
